Preparing the next generation

The Greater Carolinas Red Cross provides young people with meaningful opportunities for education, training, and volunteer/community service so that they remain a part of the Red Cross family throughout their lives. There are a variety of opportunities for all ages from elementary school children to high school students.

Youth Education Programs include:

  • BASIC AID TRAINING (BAT)
    Students learn emergency response skills, rescue breathing, and ways to prevent and care for choking, wounds, nosebleeds, falls and animal bites.  Workbooks include response for fire safety, poisoning, water accidents, and more.  This class is used to enhance science or health curriculum.  Grades 4-8
  • FIRST AID FOR CHILDREN TODAY (FACT)
    Promotes awareness of situations that lead to injury, ways to prevent injuries, and making choices that positively influence student’s health and the environment.  Teachers may choose for the program to be taught over several weeks or only use individual lessons.  Each topic can be covered in 30-45 minutes. Grades K-3

  • DISASTER DUDES
    Designed to promote disaster awareness and teaches how one’s family should prepare for and respond to a natural disaster.  This one time presentation is completed in a 45-minute session. Grade 3-7
  • MASTERS OF DISASTER
    Provides students with information to help them prepare for disasters and stay safe during and after a disaster in their home, school, or community.  This curriculum includes 7 lessons with each being completed in about 45 minutes.  Additional lessons on general preparedness hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, lightning, earthquakes, and fire safety are available. Grades K-8
  • FACING FEAR
    Designed to help children feel safe and secure in the aftermath of a terrorist attack or tragic event.  This program gives students experience in talking about frightening events that they see reported in the media and hear discussed at school and at home. Grades K-12
  • SCRUBBY BEAR
    Program designed to teach children about hygiene.  Kids learn about germs, where they are found and how they spread, correct hand washing techniques, and its importance in preventing sickness.  This one hour presentation includes a hand-on demonstration with glo-germ. Grades Pre K-4
  • LONGFELLOW’S WHALES TALES
    A video driven program that includes basic water safety instruction and easy to remember rules.  A school or class may borrow the WHALE Tales video and posters in order to present the program and/or the Red Cross instructor will come and teach the class. Entire presentation takes 30 minutes to one hour. Grades K-6
  • WHEN I’M IN CHARGE
    Teaches children how to be safe when they are home alone: personal safety, responsibilities, phone and internet usage, and who to call if an emergency occurs.  This course includes 6 lessons with each being completed in about one hour. Grades 3-6
