The Greater Carolinas Chapter of the American Red Cross opened a shelter Tuesday evening for residents displaced by local flooding. Through a partnership with East Mecklenburg High School, the Red Cross was able to use the gymnasium to shelter people in need. The shelter closed at 11:15 p.m. after no one sought help at East Meck. The Red Cross continues to monitor the weather and will assess the community’s needs.

Around 12:30 p.m., the Greater Carolinas Chapter responded to a call stemming from a fire at 812 Capps Hill Mine Rd on April 8. The residents had somewhere to stay the night of the fire, but called the office for a place to stay tonight. He was asleep last night when a neighbor woke him as his house was on fire. The Charlotte Fire Department rersponded and put out the fire. In the process, the sheetrock ceilings in the Kitchen,Dining, Living, and back bedroom were torn down to some degree and those rooms sustained smoke and water damage. The home is uninhabitable.
The house is also occupied by the client’s sister and 4-year-old niece. The Red Cross provided shelter and clothing.

The Greater Carolinas Chapter responded to a three-alarm fire Sunday afternoon at the Southern Metals Corporation on Donald Ross Road. Volunteers were on the scene within 10 minutes of getting the call, and they provided food and drinks for members of the Charlotte Fire Department as well as other first responders.

Red Cross volunteers provided breakfast and drinks to members of the Charlotte Fire Department and other first responders. Volunteers remain on the scene, providing food and drinks for first responders and working with clients to ensure their needs are met.

The Greater Carolinas Chapter of the American Red Cross was alerted around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday to a three-alarm fire at Creekwood Apartments off East Independence Boulevard.
Red Cross volunteers provided breakfast and drinks to residents, members of the Charlotte Fire Department, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and other first responders.
The Red Cross is working with the management of the apartment complex to place affected residents in other vacant apartments in Creekwood or other complexes owned by the company.
Because clients may not be placed in furnished apartments, they will also receive cots and blankets from the Red Cross. The chapter is providing comfort kits as well as other assistance to these clients on a case-by-case basis.
Red Cross volunteers and staff will remain on the scene through the afternoon, providing lunch for first responders and working with clients to ensure their needs are met.

An electrical fire started early, Monday morning on Powell Bridge Road in Harmony, NC. The resident of the home ecaped safely and the home had minor damages. The American Red Cross Disaster Action Team was there to support the family by giving them funds to pay for food and a local hotel. The family will be working with their insurance company and the American Red Cross Disaster Services Department while repairing their home.

On Sunday, January 25th, Disaster Action Team Four, responded to a single family fire on Cascade Street in Mooresville. The American Red Cross helped the family of two find a place to stay, provided them with comfort kits and also gave them monetary assistance for food and clothing. The Disaster Services Department at the American Red Cross in Mooresville will continue to work with the family in their recovery process.

Early, Friday morning the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team One responded to a house fire in Troutman. The fire originated in the back bedroom of the home and is believed to have started because of electrical issues. The home on Windbrook Drive was completely destroyed and displaced the family of five. Fortunately, everyone got out of the house safely. The Disaster Action Team helped the family by providing them assistance for food, clothing, medications and infant supplies. The Troutman family will be working with the American Red Cross and their insurance company to recover from their losses.

The American Red Cross Disaster Action Team One responded to flooding that occurred at Forest Park Garden apartments in Statesville, Saturday evening. The Statesville Fire Chief assessed the apartments and determined that three apartments were affected by the flooding. Two of the three units requested Red Cross assistance. The Disaster Action Team provided the families with warm, dry hotel rooms to stay in and also assistance with food. The apartment complex manager is currently repairing the apartments and the families plan on moving back in as soon as possible. The American Red Cross will continue to work with the families and the apartment complex to ensure a speedy recovery.

The Emergency Services Department of the Greater Carolinas Chapter assisted a family of four after a fire occurred at their home on Carpenter Avenue in Mooresville, Wednesday evening. The fire, believed to originate from an outside source, moved through the home quickly, causing major fire, smoke, and water damage to the residence. After assessing the family’s needs, the American Red Cross provided the family assistance with food, clothing, infant supplies and also referred them to other agencies in the local area for help. The Mooresville family plans to stay with relatives until they can move into a new home.

The Greater Carolinas Chapter’s Disaster Action Team responded to a single-family three-alarm fire that completely destroyed the home. The Red Cross provided water, snacks and refreshments to firefighters and other first responders. The family, consisting of two adults, three children and a dog, were displaced as a result of the fire, which destroyed their home. The Red Cross team assisted the family by providing comfort kits, which include basic toiletries and teddy bears for the children. The nonprofit is also prepared to provide temporary shelter and financial assistance for food and clothing should the family need such assistance. Click here for pictures from this event.

On January 3rd, a trailer on Yellowstone Lane in Statesville was destroyed by an electrial fire. The two residences of the home suffered from burns and smoke inhalation. The American Red Cross Disaster Action Team met the family at the hospital and provided emotional suport, money for food, clothing and a hotel room. The American Red Cross disaster volunteers also helped the family with transportation issues and is currently working with the family to move into a new home, they can call their own.
